literature

recent books completed:
Bright Lights, Big City
A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius
Pyongyang (graphic novel)
Interpreter of Maladies
Siddhartha

currently reading:
A Wild Sheep Chase

the speed with which i zip through books is evidence of my spending more of my life on the subway than anywhere else these days. reviews to come if i find the time. sadly, the life of a student doesn't offer that luxury.

disheartened

lately it seems like new york is throwing me disappointment after disappointment. it makes me want to sing out in defiance,

"i can see clearly now the rain has gone.
i can see all the obstacles in my way.
gone are the dark clouds that had me blind.
it's gonna be a bright (bright), bright (bright), SUNSHINE-Y DAY!"

but yeah... a little too bummed to do that just yet =/

no black AMEX for me

tuition for the semester: $16,815
required textbooks: $610.50
optional textbooks: $215.70
2 sets of scrubs: $66.28
1 pair of hideous nursing shoes: $46.95
name pin: $10
nursing essentials bag: $100
other odds & ends: ~$50

GRAND TOTAL: $17,914.43

learning is expensive.

all of this dinero spent within one week of returning to ny, in addition to my regular unforgiving living costs is causing ever-increasing stress manifested in emotional outbursts and ulcer symptoms. i wish i could move to a society that performs all its transactions with coconuts and nice gestures.

haphazard media night

critics choice award
boo. how dare you cut off the excited asian man's acceptance speech! go ang lee. at least he got a second moment of glory immediately after.

and my goodness, jake gyllenhaal looked scrumptious. he's definitely my kind of wonderful.

the bachelor
IN PARIS!!!! my second home... ah, nostalgia.

his bio: travis, a hunky 6'4" 33-year-old ER doctor who is completing his residency at vanderbilt medical center in nashville. graduated magna cum laude from duke and earned his MD from uva. impressive. never mind his poor french accent.

quotations of the night goes to Allie G, 33:
"i'm a doctor, he's a doctor... i'm a shoe-in. i need someone like him because my eggs are rotting!" and later, "i'm ready to move on, you know, to the reproductive phase so if that meets your goals, then i'm here." and when she wasn't picked, "why didn't you choose me? be straight up. you're not attracted to me, i'm too short, i have small boobs, what??"

it's obvious from her subsequent interrogation of him, the other women, and the host that this is a very jaded woman.

addendum: why are the majority of girls 23-24 yrs old?! i thought the marriage/engagement surge was a weird bug of '05 but maybe i'm just getting to that ripe age! how terrifying.
